Films for a Changing World presents: Flying Lessons

March 24 • 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join us Tuesday, March 24th at 6 PM for a screening of Elizabeth Nichols’ 2024 documentary, Flying Lessons. The film will be followed by a discussion led by ONE Northside and all proceeds will go towards supporting their work.

About the Film

Elizabeth Nichols’ Flying Lessons is a beautiful ode to a New York City Lower East Side artist as well as to the larger “dying breed” that once roamed the streets of Alphabet City, performing in its now extinct clubs. Importantly, it’s also a call to end rampant gentrification and a love story between director and character all rolled into one. When their Lower East Side building comes under siege by a predatory landlord, a young filmmaker and an aging punk artist forge an unlikely friendship. As the two women collaborate on a portrait of a creative life amidst NYC’s cultural crisis, they discover what it means to be neighbors.

About the Series

Haymarket Books is proud to present the next installment in our community film series: Films for a Changing World. We envision this community film series to be a place for people to come together in community during this volatile political moment. In times like these, our struggle to change the world can feel even more difficult to sustain and we hope these events will be a space to share a collective cultural experience and connect with one another.

Organizing Neighborhoods for Equality: Northside (ONE Northside) is a community organization resulting from the merger of Lakeview Action Coalition and Organization of the Northeast. Together, ONE and LAC have a history of nearly 60 years of powerful and effective community organizing.
